Fuck that.

Also holy shit what a pic. It’s been a long time since a competitive rally car was rear engined and/or a plucky French manufacturer and/or a coupe.

All this thinking about Matra got me thinking quite a lot about Alpine

So cool. I’ve got a real soft spot for these contemporary ads.

Also for Renault. I love my MR2 and the idea of using existing Toyota running gear (tansverse 4 from a FWD Toyota in my case) in a layout that transforms it completely makes so much sense . It’s not some weird engine with bespoke parts and questionable reliability, it’s a Toyota engine, proven in all manner of Celica/Corolla/Paseo/Camry perhaps, etc.

I suspect that’s what Alpine did with Renault bits. As did Matra to a degree

As a mater of fact, if you also accept read-mid-engined cars, the new Alpine A110 R-GT just officially started this year and unfortunately only been used at one rally yet : there was two of those on the “Le rally du Touquet” which was the first event of the Championnat de France des Rallyes 2020 (the tarmac one), the car was homologated only 3 days before the event by the FFSA (Fédération Française de Sport Automobile).

François Delecour/Jean-Rodolphe Guigonnet arrived 11th and the first 2WD car while the other car of Cédric Robert/Matthieu Duval broke an axle the first day after a jump and ended 78th.

And i also can argue (still if you accept rear mid-engined cars) that the T1A (4WD) and T1B (2WD) prototypes from the french Offroad Rally championship (not to confuse with the d irt rallye chamionships (championnat de rallye terre) which is based on similar car categories as the tarmac chamionships) are technically rear mid-engined lightweight French rally cars but they are not based on road-lagal cars so it might not count.

God damn. Imagine the effort that goes into AWD-ing an MR2, and then doing it in such a ghetto way.
